Haven't I Heard This Before? How Music Is Recycled in Piano Works by Beethoven, Franck, and Liszt

In this lecture-recital, award-winning pianist Awadagin Pratt explores the musical forms used by Beethoven, Franck, and Liszt in the solo piano works featured in his UAE debut recital at the NYUAD Arts Center on December 5, 2019: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 31, Opus 110, Franck’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue, FWV 21, and Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B Minor. Focusing on cyclicism as a compositional technique to impart unity both within and between movements in these works, Pratt demonstrates how musical form is critical to the formation of memory, powerfully shaping and reshaping how we listen to, and remember, the music we hear.
