Global Sustainable Cities: Evaluating the Rise of Mega-Cities as Environmental Regulators

Over half of the world’s population now lives in cities, and this share is expected to increase to close to 70 percent by 2050. With growing urbanization cities have become major consumers of natural resources. Yet, cities also have the potential to be highly efficient users of natural resources and part of the solution to the world’s pressing environmental challenges. Recognizing this dynamic, this conference analyzes sustainability policies implemented in global cities and examines opportunities — and potential drawbacks — to allow cities to play an increasingly significant role in environmental regulation.
